ALI History
In the summer of 2010, the Rev. David Drake and the Rev. Allen Hughes met in Colorado with the purpose of addressing the need for leadership development and repairing divisions between orthodox Anglicans. During a week in the Collegiate Mountains in Colorado, the vision and purpose of ALI were established – to promote “gospel growth, humble collaboration, and life-long leadership learning” among orthodox Anglican leaders.
The goal was to invite Anglican leaders off the front lines of ministry for an immersion experience that allowed for space to hear from the Lord on their gifting, calling, and leadership potential. The first ALI trip was launched in Colorado in 2011. Since then, ALI has established trips for bishops, senior leaders, rectors, assistant clergy, and clergy wives in Colorado, the British Virgin Islands, and the South Carolina Lowcountry.
In the summer of 2014, the leadership team expanded and an ALI Council consisting of leaders from the ACNA, ACiC, and AMiA met in Buena Vista, Colorado to establish structures to increase the capacity of ALI to serve more leaders. Archbishop Foley Beach, Bishop Philip Jones, Bishop Trevor Walters, and the Rev. Mike McDonald joined the team to form the ALI Council.
ALI continues to do research and development on new initiatives and to develop program leaders to expand capacity. The ALI goal is to serve every Anglican bishop, rector, assistant, seminarian, worship director, and youth minister, pastor theologian and clergy spouse in North America.
